River RaftingAPURIMAC RIVER (4 days)This trip is one of the shortest and most beautiful rafting expeditions in Peru. The river starts in Arequipa and flows towards Cusco and the jungle. On its way it shapes the fabulous Apurimac Canyon which can be as deep as 3000 meters. During these four days we will run rapids class II, III, IV and V and will be in places that can only be reached by a raft. It’s also interesting to know that we will be running the river which is considered to be the farthest origin of the huge Amazon River. Day 1We leave via the Huallpachaca Bridge, 4 hours from Cusco. After a delicious lunch we prepare our equipment. We row for an hour through class III and IV rapids and reach our first campsite “El Chute.” Meals: L, D Day 2After a nutritious breakfast we pack up our equipment and enter the water. Today we run through amazing class III and IV rapids. We also have a few portages (rapids that you walk around) and pass through the deepest portion of the canyon; in this section we stop for lunch. During the afternoon we continue our trip through several class III and IV rapids, passing amazing granite walls, which have been eroded as a result of the movement of the water. This class III rapids section is one of the most beautiful in the canyon. We arrive at the beach “La cola del Dragon” where we set up our second campsite in preparation for the enjoyment of an energizing dinner. Meals: B, L, D Day 3In the morning we navigate the river crossing class III and IV rapids. After lunch we face the famous “Tooth Ache,” class V rapids. We row a bit more until we arrive at our campsite which we share with a family of foxes, who often come to visit the travelers. Meals: B, L, D Day 4Today we enjoy more class IV and V rapids, like “Babalua” and the “Last Smile”; after these rapids we encounter a section of class II-III at “Quinta Primavera,” which continues until we reach our lunch spot and final point of our rafting trip. Here we await our transportation that takes us back to Cusco. Once in the city we have time to enjoy a hot shower before going out for a wonderful dinner where we all celebrate our trip. COLCA RIVER EXPEDITION (8 days)Visited by many travelers on its upper part, but only by a few on its very bottom, the Colca Canyon is considered as one of the deepest and most dramatic canyons around the world. This 8 day expedition leads us from Arequipa City to the bottom of the canyon, allowing us to live the experience of visiting beautiful typical towns, trekking down the canyon, bathing in delicious hot springs and rowing the incredible Colca River almost to its end. This is a true adventure. Day 1In the morning we are transferred by our private bus to the highest part of the canyon, where we can visit the historic valley of Colca. On the way we stop to have lunch and enjoy the beautiful view of the glaciers Sabancaya (19,574 feet) and Ampato (20,703 feet). Our way goes through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve and continues to the hot springs of Chivay where we find the time to relax after our four hour car trip. After enjoying a nice bath we continue to our hotel. Meals: L, D Day 2Today we have an early start. We follow the left margin of the Colca Valley, visiting the towns and churches as well as the ruins and the famous Condor Cross Lookout, where we can spot these amazing birds. In the afternoon we arrive to Huambo (10,827 feet), where we spend the night in a basic hostel, waiting for the interesting trek the next day. Meals: B, L, D Day 3We get up with the whistle of Juan, the blacksmith in charge of the donkeys, animals that will take all the equipment to the river. Passing through fields of agriculture and waiving the town people, curious and happy to see us, we trek for about three hours until reaching the bridge of Huambo where have lunch surrounded by beautiful waterfalls. We continue walking the narrow path to Canco. Here we camp at the shores of the Colca, finally happy to feel the temperate waters of the river. Meals: B, L, D Day 4Early in morning, while the guides set up the equipment, we start walking up stream for about half a mile until we reach the Juan Pablo II Waterfall. We return to the camp and after a brief technical and security briefing we go into the river. We row for about two and a half miles through class II and III rapids to the point where the Mamacocha River joins and where the truly Colca begins. From this point the current double itself. After lunch we row for 20 more minutes to reach our camp site “The Wall”. Tomorrow is an important day. Meals: B, L, D Day 5After a healthy breakfast we go into the canyons wall, sector that has four rapids class IV+, depending in the level of water, some of them will be ran, and some others will be portaged. Afterwards we find a very fun sector formed by class III rapids until we reach the Canoandes Rapid, our lunch spot. After lunch we have some time to walk the rapid and have a good run. We row for about 20 more minutes before reaching our next camp site in the Jazmin Ridge. A very nice short trek can be done from here. Meals: B, L, D Day 6Without a doubt this is a special day. As we start rowing we notice how the canyon narrows itself to an amazing point. The experience is totally unique. After half an hour rowing class II and III rapids, we reach the condor shower, a waterfall that comes from hundreds of meters up. The enormous falling distance and the strong winds make this water become mist, which is used as a shower by the condors. After seeing a few of this giant birds take their bath we continue rowing class III and IV rapids to the gate of the chocolate canyon, which name comes from the color of the walls. Here we stop for lunch, to then enjoy the next rapids that lead us to the “mosquito” beach, starting point for one of the hardest and most incredible treks in this canyon. Meals: B, L, D Day 7We wake up this morning knowing that we have a hard day in front of us. We begin rowing for about 15 minutes as a warm up, until we reach the hardest section of the canyon, with class IV and V rapids. After passing the enormous rapids we stop for lunch. The impressive Reparaz rapid is the next one, but this one we don’t run. A final 15 minutes rowing distance separate us from our next camp at Esperanza beach. Here we enjoy a well deserved rest and a delicious dinner prepared by our guides. Meals: B, L, D Day 8We leave the camp site and the river takes us to the green canyon, with rapid class VI (Poland canyon). Guides and guests work as a group to pass the equipment. Once we’ve passed this canyon we enjoy a snack and have some time to rest. Then we continue for a few more kilometers through class II and III rapids, to the conjunction with the Andamayo River, end of our river journey. Here our transportation is waiting with some cold beers to celebrate the end of the fabulous adventure. We are taken to Mauro’s house to enjoy a delicious lunch based on fresh river shrimps. We return to our hotel in Arequipa. At night we meet for our farewell dinner. Meals: B, L Included
